Nervous system family

At Nervous System Family, we believe that many of the daily challenges families face from emotional overwhelm, morning chaos, sleep struggles and heightened sensitivity- are deeply connected to the state of the child’s nervous system.

Our work supports parents and children to move from survival mode back toward calm, connection and regulation.

We offer practical nervous system support for overwhelmed parents and sensitive children helping your home move from daily stress toward calm, connection and cooperation.

Why Nervous System Regulation Matters for Families

Every child is born with a nervous system that is constantly learning from the environment around them.

The body is always asking one simple question:

“Am I safe?”

When the nervous system feels safe, children are naturally able to sleep, learn, regulate emotions and connect with others.

When safety is disrupted by stress, been overwhelmed, illness, or life events, the body can remain stuck in protective states such as anxiety, emotional shutdown, sleep disruption, or behavioural struggles.

Nervous system regulation helps restore the body’s natural rhythm of activation and recovery.

Families often notice changes when the nervous system begins to settle:

• Children sleep more deeply and settle more easily

• Emotional outbursts become less frequent and easier to manage

• Parents feel calmer and more confident supporting their child

• The body releases accumulated tension stored in muscles and fascia

• The whole family environment becomes more stable and connected

Through simple daily practices and guided co-regulation techniques, families can gradually rebuild a sense of biological safety, helping both parents and children return to a more balanced and resilient state.

These changes often begin with small moments of regulation that gradually build into more stable patterns over time.

The goal is not perfection, but helping families create a home environment where the nervous system can return to a state of safety, connection, and resilience.

Signs Your Child’s Nervous System May Be Overwhelmed

Many parents notice changes in their child’s behaviour but are unsure what is really happening beneath the surface.

What often looks like “bad behaviour” is actually a nervous system that is struggling to feel safe.

Children’s bodies are constantly responding to their environment, and when stress builds in the nervous system, it can show up in many different ways.

Common Signs Parents Notice

• Frequent emotional meltdowns

• Difficulty falling or staying asleep

• Anxiety or constant worry

• Sensitivity to noise, touch, or change

• Trouble calming down after becoming upset

• Clinginess or difficulty separating from parents

• Physical complaints such as stomach aches or headaches

• Sudden changes in behaviour or mood

These are often signs that a child’s nervous system is stuck in a state of protection rather than safety.

Why This Happens

Children’s nervous systems are still developing and rely heavily on co-regulation with parents.

Stressful events, illness, emotional shocks, changes in routine, or long periods of overwhelm can cause the body to remain in a heightened stress state.

When this happens, the nervous system becomes less flexible and the body struggles to return to calm on its own.

This is where nervous system regulation becomes important.

The Good News

The nervous system is designed to return to balance when the right conditions are present.

With simple daily practices and supportive co-regulation, the body can gradually shift out of stress patterns and back into a state of safety and connection.

Where Many Families Begin

For many parents, the best place to start is the 10-Day Family Reset.

This guided program introduces simple daily practices that help restore calm to the nervous system and bring a sense of stability back into the home environment.

Child Anxiety & Emotional Overload

Many children today experience periods of anxiety, emotional overload, or constant worry.

While this can sometimes appear suddenly, it is often connected to how the nervous system is responding to stress and change in a child’s environment.

When the nervous system becomes overloaded, children may struggle to settle, become easily upset, or feel anxious even in situations that once felt safe. These responses are not signs that something is “wrong” with the child, but rather signals that their nervous system is working hard to protect them.

Through calm environments, supportive routines, and parent–child co-regulation, the nervous system can gradually return to a more balanced and resilient state.

Child Sleep Difficulties

Sleep is closely connected to the state of the nervous system. When a child’s body is carrying stress or remains in a heightened alert state, it can become difficult for the brain to fully relax into deep, restorative sleep.

Parents may notice difficulties such as trouble falling asleep, frequent waking during the night, or children who seem restless even when tired.

Supporting a child’s nervous system regulation during the day can often help improve sleep naturally, as the body learns to shift more easily into a calm and restorative state at night.

Emotional Meltdowns & Behaviour

Children communicate through behaviour, especially when their nervous system becomes overwhelmed.

Emotional meltdowns, sudden outbursts, or difficulty calming down after becoming upset are often signs that a child’s nervous system has moved into a stress response.

In these moments, children are not choosing to behave poorly — their body is simply struggling to regulate strong emotions.

When parents understand the role of the nervous system and learn simple co-regulation practices, these moments can become opportunities to help a child return to calm and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any previous experience with nervous system regulation?

Not at all. The program introduces simple practices that parents and children can begin straight away.

How much time do the daily practices take?

Most of the routines are short and easy to fit into normal family life, often taking just a few minutes.

What age children is the program suitable for?

The practices are designed to support children across a wide age range, with parents guiding the process through co-regulation.

What if my child struggles with anxiety or emotional meltdowns?

Many families begin the program when they are experiencing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, sleep disruption, or behavioural challenges.

Where should we start?

For most families the best starting point is the 10-Day Family Reset, which gently introduces the core practices used throughout the Nervous System Family Method.

The nervous system family approach is designed for parents who recognise that something in their child’s world feels a little overloaded- and who are open to gentle practical ways to support it.

This may be a good fit if:

-You have a sensitive strong willed or easily overwhelmed child.

-Morning transitions or bedtime can feel harder then they should

-You want to understand what’s happening underneath behaviour.

-You prefer calm relationship-based approaches over harsh discipline

-You are willing to try small consistent daily supports

-You understand that meaningful change builds gradually.

This work is for parents who want to support regulation at the root- not just manage the surface.

What Parents Say

"Within the first week our evenings were calmer. Our daughter started settling into sleep more easily and we felt like we finally had tools to support her."

"The biggest change for us was understanding what was happening in our son's nervous system. The meltdowns made sense and we could support him instead of feeling helpless."

"The 10-Day Reset helped our whole home feel calmer. Even small changes made a big difference for our family."

Testimonial’s

Karen – Working Mum of Two

Before: Afternoons were extremely stressful and the after-school meltdowns were overwhelming for everyone.

What helped: The routines were short, practical, and easy to integrate into daily family life. Just a few minutes each morning helped me feel calmer and more regulated.

Result: Within a few weeks the home environment changed. The kids became less explosive, the after-school outbursts eased, and we now enjoy small rituals together that help the whole family regulate.

Martin – Stay-at-Home Dad of Three

Before: Our house often felt chaotic by the evening and I found myself reacting instead of responding to the kids.

What helped: The simple nervous system practices only took a few minutes and could be woven naturally into the day.

Result: I noticed a huge shift in my own regulation first. As I became calmer, the kids followed. The atmosphere at home feels much more peaceful now.

Louise – Teacher and Mum of Two

Before: My daughter would often come home from school completely overwhelmed and it was very hard to settle the evening routine.

What helped: Learning how to regulate the environment and using a few simple practices after school.

Result: The difference has been remarkable. The after-school transition is much calmer and we now have little rituals together that help everyone settle.

Before we started, mornings were difficult to get going and often overwhelming.

There was a lot of tension around the transition to school, and I felt like I was constantly on edge…

” Within a few days, things began to shift.

The breathing and simple practices helped both of us slow down…

“Now, there’s a sense of calm in the house that we didn’t have before. It’s not perfect, but it feels manageable—and that’s everything.”

Meet the founder

Vincent Murtagh is the founder of Nervous System Family, an approach designed to help overwhelmed families better understand and support the developing nervous system of the child.

For over two decades Vincent has worked closely with individuals and families exploring the connection between stress physiology, body based regulation and emotional wellbeing.

Drawing on his experience with Bio-Energy Therapy, Kinesiology and the Hidden Mind Protocol, Vincent developed an approach that brings these therapeutic perspectives together with an understanding of nervous system regulation.

The Nervous System Family Method places co-regulation at its foundation — helping parents better understand and regulate their own state while supporting children to gradually develop greater capacity for self-regulation.

Rather than focusing solely on behaviour, the approach looks beneath it, exploring the patterns, environments and biological states that may be shaping how a child and family respond.

His work brings together practical family experience with modern ‘nervous system science’ translating ‘nervous system science’ into gentle, practical tools for everyday life.

Through Nervous System Family’ Murtagh’s mission, is to make nervous system education practical, compassionate and accessible for everyday parents and everyday children.

What Is Co-Regulation?

A Parent’s Guide to Helping Your Child Feel Safe

Learn what co-regulation is, why children rely on it, and simple daily techniques parents can use to help calm and support their child’s nervous system.

What Is Co-Regulation?

Co-regulation is the process where a child’s nervous system settles and stabilises through the calm, steady presence of a regulated adult.

In simple terms:

Children learn to feel safe by borrowing safety from us first.

Before children can fully self-regulate, their bodies and brains rely on connection with a parent or caregiver to:

calm big emotions, recover from stress, feel safe in their body, return to focus and learning

This is not weakness — it is how the human nervous system is designed to develop.

Why Children Need Co-Regulation

A child’s nervous system is still maturing, especially in the early and primary school years. When life feels overwhelming — busy school days, transitions, tiredness, social stress — their system can shift into survival modes like:

fight (anger, defiance),flight (restlessness, anxiety),freeze (shutdown, withdrawal)

When this happens, logic and reasoning have limited effect.

What helps first is felt safety in the body.

Co-regulation provides that safety signal.

Signs Your Child May Be Seeking Co-Regulation

Many behaviours that look “bold” or “difficult” are actually nervous system overload.

Common signs include:

-Meltdowns after school

-Becoming clingy or unusually oppositional

-Difficulty settling at bedtime

-Sudden emotional outbursts

-Zoning out or shutting down

-Increased sensitivity to noise or change

-Trouble taking in instructions when tired

If you notice patterns like these, your child may be needing more nervous system support — not more discipline.

What Co-Regulation Looks Like in Everyday Life

Co-regulation is not complicated — but it is very powerful when done consistently.

It often looks like:

-Your calm voice during their storm

-Your steady breathing beside them

-Your unhurried presence after a busy day

-Your grounded body when they are dysregulated

It is less about what you say and more about the state your body is in.

Children are highly sensitive to our nervous system cues.

5. Simple Co-Regulation Techniques Parents Can Use

Start small.

Consistency matters more than perfection.

1. The Calm Presence Pause

When your child is dysregulated:

-Soften your shoulders

-Slow your breathing

-Lower your voice

-Reduce your words

Your regulated state is the intervention.

2. Side-by-Side Settling

Instead of always talking things through, try:

-Sitting beside them

-Gentle hand on back (if they like touch)

-Quiet shared space

-Calm breathing together

Many children settle faster with less talking and more presence.

3. The After-School Reset (Powerful)

The nervous system is often most overloaded after school.

Try a simple 10-minute buffer:

-Quiet snack time

-Dimmer lighting

-No rapid questions immediately

-Calm connection before homework

This small window can prevent many evening meltdowns.

4. Regulate Yourself First

This is the hidden key.

-Before stepping in:

Ask yourself:

-Is my jaw tight?

-Is my voice rushed?

-Is my body tense?

Even 3 slow breaths can shift the tone of the interaction.

5. Predictable Connection Moments

Nervous systems love rhythm.

Build small daily anchors:

-Morning cuddle or check-in

-After-school reconnection

-Calm bedtime routine

-One-to-one micro-moments

Safety grows through repetition.

Co-Regulation Takes Time

Many parents worry they are “doing it wrong” if their child doesn’t calm quickly.

Important to know:

-Dysregulated systems can take time to settle

-Consistency beats intensity

-Small daily inputs compound

-Your calm presence is never wasted

Think of co-regulation as nervous system conditioning, not a quick fix.

The Long-Term Goal: Building Self-Regulation

Co-regulation is the bridge to self-regulation.

Over time, children who experience consistent co-regulation tend to:

-Recover from upsets faster

-Sleep more easily

-Show improved emotional balance

-Manage transitions better

-Develop stronger body awareness

First we lend them our calm…

then they gradually build their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age do children stop needing co-regulation?

Children benefit from co-regulation well into the teenage years, though the form it takes evolves.

Even adults co-regulate in healthy relationships.

Am I reinforcing bad behaviour by co-regulating?

No.

You are supporting the nervous system first so the child can access learning and boundaries afterwards.

Regulation and boundaries work best together.

What if my child pushes me away?

Some children need space before connection.

Stay nearby, keep your body calm, and allow gentle re-approach rather than forcing closeness.

How long should co-regulation take?

It varies.

Some children settle in minutes; others need longer, especially if overtired or highly stimulated.

Consistency over days and weeks matters most.
